Annual Report design for the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI), Europe’s independent think tank for space.

I had recently designed the ESPI vision document “ESPI2040: Space for Prosperity, Peace and Future Generations” (view here) so was delighted to be asked to design their inaugural Annual Report 2023 “A year of transformation: Empowering Europe in Space and Beyond”.

Over the duration of the six-week project I worked closely with the ESPI team: Tomas Hrozensky, Senior Researcher and Lead on European Engagement, Alexandra Chronopoulos, Communications Officer, and Hermann Ludwig Moeller, Director of ESPI.

As copy was being written by the team I developed design concepts for the Annual Report front cover to reflect “transformation” which was to be a key theme. These concepts led to the idea of creating an illustration using AI. The final image, supplied by ESPI, used DALL·E 2, an AI system which creates realistic images from a text description, giving the report an attention grabbing front cover. The image was also used as a background tint across the three sections of the 52-page Annual Report for a cohesive and professional look.

A graphic of two circles, one emerging from the other, which appeared as a front cover concept and was widely liked by ESPI, was also incorporated in the final report design to reinforce the “transformation” theme. The page designs were kept clean and simple to clearly and effectively communicate ESPI’s achievements, activities, progress and targets. All the images supplied reflected their brand, people, and partners to create a visually strong and impactful Annual Report design.

I was tasked to handle the print in the UK to ensure the Annual Report had the same quality finish as ESPI2040 which I had also print managed. From approval of artwork to the printing of 2,000 copies and delivery (by air and road) to ESPI events in both Brussels and Vienna, was twelve working days.

An interactive pdf version of the Annual Report was also supplied.

As a result of the success of both ESPI2040 and the Annual Report 2023 I was honoured to be invited to the inauguration of ESPIs new premises at the historic Schwarzenbergplatz 16 in the heart of Vienna.
